Itinerary
Day 1 – Welcome!
Overnight: Melbourne
Welcome to Australia
Beginning our adventure in Melbourne, we’ll meet at 4pm at the hotel for our first meeting and welcome drink. Afterwards, we'll take a short short orientation walk of the local neighbourhood and then to dinner together (included) at a local restaurant.
Hotel: Savoy on Little Collins or similar (3 nights)
Day 2 - Marvellous Melbourne
Overnight: Melbourne
Exploring "The Cultural Capital" of Australia
This morning after breakfast at the hotel, we’ll depart on foot for a walking tour of some of Melbourne's important historic sites. We conclude the morning with a guided tour in the National Gallery of Victoria focussed on the Australian Collection. You're free to visit more of the museum at your own pace. Then free for lunch and the rest of the afternoon. Free for dinner.
Day 3 - Melbourne to Cairns
Overnight: Cairns
The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef
Today we fly from Melbourne to Cairns (3.5 hour flight), landing just before lunchtime. Transfer to the hotel and then visit Cairns Aquarium for an introduction to the diverse ecosystems of North Queensland's two World Heritage listed areas – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest. Free for dinner.
Hotel: Crystalbrook Flynn or similar (3 nights)
Day 4 - The Great Barrier Reef
Overnight: Cairns
The World's Largest Living Structure
Today we'll spend the day out on the Great Barrier Reef. Options to observe the reef from a semi-submersible vessel, dip your toes in, or snorkel above the coral. Lunch included. A soul-cleansing natural day out. Return to Cairns and free for dinner.
Day 5 - Kuranda
Overnight: Cairns
Scenic Railway and Rainforest Cableway
From the heart of Cairns we board the Kuranda Scenic Railway and ride on a mountain rail route originally used to service the rich mining regions of the Atherton Tablelands. Free time for lunch and options to visit the Kuranda Heritage Markets, browse boutique shops, visit the Koala Gardens (own cost + optional koala cuddling picture), or the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. We return to Cairns, not via train, but by the Rainforest Cableway known as the Skyrail. Even more stunning views across the rainforests of the Wet Tropics. Back to Cairns and free for dinner.
Day 6 - Cairns to Coffs Harbour
Overnight: Coffs Harbour
Heading for Subtropical Paradise
This morning we fly from Cairns to Brisbane. Here we meet our tour bus and continue south across the New South Wales border to the popular subtropical resort town of Coffs Harbour - with a lunch stop en route. Our journey down the Pacific Highway takes us through some of Australia’s most productive farmland: rolling hills of rich volcanic soils that produce an abundance of exotic tropical fruits, and broad alluvial river valleys where sugar cane is king. Coffs Harbour owes its popularity to its stunning location between the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and some of Australia’s finest surf beaches.
Check into our accomodation around 6pm, and then relax with a casual dinner together.
Hotel: BreakFree Aanuka or Pacific Bay Resort Coffs Harbour (2 nights)
Day 7 - Coffs Harbour
Overnight: Coffs Harbour
The Big Banana, Beaches, and Kangaroos
We start today with a visit to the Yarrila Arts Centre and Museum — learn about the culture of the local Gumbaynggirr people and their life before European settlement, and the story of the modern town. Afterwards, there’ll be time to enjoy a swim at Jetty Beach, or to stroll along the harbour wall to Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, before feasting on fish 'n' chips from the Fisherman’s Co-Op. No visit to Coffs Harbour would be complete without marveling at its iconic Big Banana. We’ll wrap up the day with a visit to Look-At-Me-Now Headland to observe the local Eastern Grey kangaroos enjoying a graze in the evening sunshine. Return to hotel and free for dinner.
Day 8 - Coffs Harbour to Uralla
Overnight: Uralla
Rainforest and Waterfalls
We depart Coffs Harbour and drive through the lush pastures of the Bellinger Valley to World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park. Take time for a short walk through magnificent subtropical rainforest and spectacular views from the Skywalk. After a lunch stop in the nearby town of Dorrigo, we continue west across the Dorrigo Plateau towards Uralla, pausing briefly to admire the dramatic Ebor Falls. Check into the hotel and unwind before a guided tasting through a selection of Hunter Valley wines, then enjoy a Sunday roast dinner together.
Hotel: The Bushranger Motor Inn, Uralla (2 nights)
Day 9 - Australian Agriculture
Overnight: Uralla
Heritage Architecture, Captain Thunderbolt, and Sheep
Uralla is a classic Australian country town that has managed to retain its small-town charm. This morning's walking tour will focus on some of the immaculately restored and maintained heritage buildings, as well as tales of the notorious bushranger (outlaw) Captain Thunderbolt at the local history museum. After time for lunch in town, we’ll head out to the nearby Kentucky district to meet an award-winning farmer. Michael is a modern farmer who has embraced the need to diversify. As well as producing some of the world’s finest merino wool, he runs beef cattle and has a fast-growing (literally) agroforestry business. Back in town in plenty of time to enjoy dinner at one of Uralla’s two historic pubs.
Day 10 - The Hunter Valley Wine Region
Overnight: Pokolbin, Hunter Valley
New South Wales' Premier Wine Region
Leaving Uralla this morning, we’ll make our way through the scenic New England countryside, with a couple of stops en route. Arrive in Pokolbin in the heart of the Hunter Valley and check in. Enjoy lunch followed by a relaxed wine tasting at one of the region’s local wineries within walking distance of the hotel. Free for dinner this evening.
Hotel: Mercure Hunter Valley Gardens or similar (1 night)
Day 11 – Hunter Valley to Sydney
Overnight: Sydney
The Rocks and Sydney Harbour
We start the day with a drive down to Sydney, taking a stop or two en route. Arrive by midday, drop bags at our city centre hotel and grab some lunch before check-in after 2pm. We’ll meet up in the afternoon for a stroll down to the historic Rocks area, where the British First Fleet landed in 1788, take a commuter ferry to admire views from the harbour back to the city skyline and the famous Sydney Harbour landmarks, then to dinner together a local restaurant.
Hotel: A by Adina or similar (3 nights)
Day 12 - Sydney Opera House
Overnight: Sydney
Sydney - The Harbour City
Sydneysiders are justly proud of their city’s modern public transport network. We’ll make use of it this morning to make our way over to Hyde Park. This leafy central park is the starting point for a short guided walk down to the Royal Botanic Gardens that takes us past many of the city’s most historic buildings. We’ll pause for a while in the gardens, where you can relax at the café or explore the gardens and take in spectacular Sydney Harbour views. From the gardens, it’s a short stroll to the Sydney Opera House and a guided tour of the iconic structure that has come to symbolize modern Australia. Free for lunch and the rest of the afternoon for further exploration, or a visit to one of Sydney's many excellent museums. Free for dinner.
Day 13 - Sydney Beaches and Bays
Overnight: Sydney
Bondi Beach and Watson's Bay
Today we’ll explore more of Sydney, using public transport to reach some of its famous and less-famous beaches. Enjoy time at Bondi Beach and walk some of the coastal walkway. Option to have Fish 'n' Chips at Watsons Bay, before ferrying back to the city in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free before we enjoy a special last night meal together and toast new friends.
