Itinerary
Day 1 – Auckland
Overnight: Auckland, North Island
Nau mai ki Aotearoa / Welcome to New Zealand!
We’ll gather at our hotel at 4pm for a welcome meeting and drinks. An orientation walk through downtown Auckland leads us to our first dinner together, where we'll begin to get to know our fellow tour members.
Day 2 - Auckland
Overnight: Auckland, North Island
A Hundred Reasons to Love Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland
A morning walking tour introduces us to Auckland before we catch a local public bus to Auckland Museum. Here, a guided tour explores New Zealand’s history, natural world and cultures. Our museum tour concludes just before lunchtime, leaving the afternoon free to follow your own interests around the city. This evening you are free for dinner to explore Auckland's diverse dining scene.
Day 3 - Waiheke Island
Overnight: Auckland, North Island
A Taste of Waiheke’s Creative Spirit
This morning we'll board the passenger ferry for a 40-minute scenic ferry ride to Waiheke Island. Upon arrival meet our private bus and local driver-guide. Visit a local winery and a brewery/distillery. Tastings at both, and lunch at one or other. In the afternoon visit a local sculpture garden and spend some time in Oneroa village. Return to Auckland city in late afternoon or early evening. Free for dinner.
Day 4 - Hobbiton and Rotorua
Overnight: Rotorua, North Island
A Journey into Middle Earth
Heading south from Auckland, we make our way to Hobbiton, the movie set near Matamata created for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Whether you can quote the movies word-for-word, or you don't even know what a hobbit is, there's plenty to enjoy as we explore this lovingly detailed corner of Middle Earth. Lunch is included at Hobbiton. Afterwards we continue to Rotorua, our home for the next two nights.
Day 5 - Rotorua
Overnight: Rotorua, North Island
Māori Immersion Day
Rotorua’s geothermal landscape provides the setting for a day exploring Māori culture and meeting local people. Our visits include Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland and Te Puia, home to the Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, geysers, mud pools and a kiwi bird house. Through our local connections, we’ll also visit a family homestead and share lunch with a Māori family. The day concludes at Te Puia with a buffet dinner and Māori cultural performance, including haka.
Day 6 - Rotorua to Ōamaru
Overnight: Ōamaru, South Island
Flight South, Canterbury Plains, and Little Blue Penguins
A morning flight takes us from Rotorua to Christchurch on the South Island. From here, we drive south across the Canterbury Plains, with the Southern Alps rising to the west. We reach the Victorian heritage town of Ōamaru in the early evening. After dinner together, this evening we observe the world’s smallest penguins, kororā or little blue penguins, returning to shore from their day’s fishing. Colony guides explain their life cycles and the conservation work that helps protect them as we watch from an outdoor seated viewing area. Photography of the penguins is not permitted, for their wellbeing.
Day 7 - Ōamaru to Queenstown
Overnight: Queenstown, South Island
Architecture, Boulders and Cellar Doors
Begin with a heritage walking tour of Ōamaru, which boasts some of the finest Victorian architecture in the country. Our next stop is at Moeraki, where mysterious large boulders up to sixty million years old line the beach. Then we turn inland to the heart of Central Otago wine country. Enjoy lunch at Ophir, followed by a visit to a local winery for a guided tasting and insights into one of the world’s most southerly wine regions. We arrive in Queenstown in the early evening.
Day 8 - Milford Sound
Overnight: Queenstown, South Island
Fiordland and Milford Sound
Today brings a long but spectacular day-trip to Milford Sound. We’ll take several stops for short walks in Fiordland National Park along the way. At Milford Sound a two-hour nature cruise takes us the full length of the fiord to the Tasman Sea, passing waterfalls, rainforest and towering peaks, with opportunities to spot wildlife. Onboard commentary helps bring the landscape to life. Boxed lunch is included on the boat. Return to Queenstown by bus, retracing our scenic route, or choose an optional flight for an aerial perspective of Fiordland and a considerably shorter day. Fee for dinner.
The optional return flight is at your own cost and should be booked through Mondumo prior to the start of the tour. Flights are weather-dependent.
Day 9 - Queenstown
Overnight: Queenstown, South Island
A Vacation from Your Vacation
The full day is yours in Queenstown, known as the Adventure Capital of the World. There's plenty to choose from, whether you feel like getting active or taking it easy, from cruising Lake Wakatipu aboard the historic steamship TSS Earnslaw, to mountain biking, luge riding, jet boating, or unwind with a spa treatment or massage.
Today’s optional activities are at your own cost and booked by you. We’re happy to provide suggestions.
Day 10 - Wānaka and the West Coast
Overnight: Franz Josef, South Island
Lakes, Local Art and Mountain Passes
Leaving Queenstown, we make a short drive to Wānaka. Stop by Lake Wānaka, then visit with a local artist. Next we skirt the western side of Lake Hawea, stop for lunch, then climb gradually to cross Haast Pass. Stops for short walks along the way, and arrive into Franz Josef township in the early evening, where we’ll dine together.
Day 11 – Franz Josef and Lake Matheson
Overnight: Franz Josef, South Island
Glacier Views and Rainforest Trails
A short drive brings us to the Franz Josef Glacier Valley, where we explore a couple of short trails and, weather permitting, see the glacier in the distance. Free time for lunch in town before a longer guided nature walk around Lake Matheson in the afternoon. Along the way, we’ll learn about the plants and wildlife that make this part of New Zealand so distinctive. Free for dinner.
Day 12 - Coast-to-Coast TranzApline Train
Overnight: Christchurch, South Island
Pounamu Traditions and an Alpine Railway
Travelling up the West Coast this morning we’ll arrive into the town of Hokitika, famous centre for pounamu greenstone (NZ jade) carving. We meet master carvers who will have pre-shaped our stones that we get to polish and take home as our taonga (treasure) from the whenua (land) of Aotearoa (New Zealand). Learn about the importance of pounamu to Māori and its cultural significance today. Free time for lunch. At Greymouth, board the TranzAlpine Train to Christchurch. One of the world’s great train rides, we travel in comfort through chiseled alpine mountains, crossing deep gorges and alongside ice-fed rivers. Arrive into Christchurch in the evening.
Day 13- Christchurch
Overnight: Christchurch, South Island
Exploring the Garden City
This morning we start with a walking tour of Christchurch, which concludes at “Quake City”. This multi-sensory attraction informs, engages and educates visitors about the region’s earthquakes. Your afternoon is free in Christchurch, known as the ‘Garden City’. Options to visit Christchurch Art Gallery, the International Antarctic Centre, go punting on the Avon River, or visit Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens. Tonight we’ll share fond memories of Aotearoa New Zealand and toast new friends at our final dinner together.
Day 14 – Tour Over After Breakfast

Haere Rā, So Long, Farewell!
Breakfast is provided, but there are no group activities today. Christchurch Airport is easily reachable by public transport, taxi or Uber from our accommodation. There are various car rental companies located close to our hotel and near the airport if you are extending your South Island road trip. For those flying home, some international flights depart from Christchurch but the majority are out of Auckland Airport; a short hop flight will take you there. The main airlines for this are Air New Zealand and JetStar. Your guide will be on hand to offer any other onward travel advice.

WHAT'S INCLUDED
This tour is designed for a small group of 16 to 24 travellers and includes the services of a top-rated professional tour guide, centrally located hotels, and a comfortable tour bus with extra space. The price covers: accommodation every night of the tour; all breakfasts; nine other meals; all sightseeing and group activities listed in the itinerary; transportation throughout the tour including the internal flight from Rotorua to Christchurch and the coast to coast Tranzalpine train; and ALL TIPS/GRATUITIES for drivers, lead tour guides and local tour guides, and for wait staff at group meals.
Tour prices are per person and listed in US dollars. The twin price applies to guests sharing either a twin room (two beds in one room) or a double room (one large bed).

Activity Level
This tour is designed for travellers who enjoy being out and about. Due to the size and geography of New Zealand, some longer drives are unavoidable, but we break them up with regular stops. To get the most out of the experience, you should be reasonably fit and comfortable with regular walking. On the most active days, walking is spread throughout the day and typically totals up to around 5 miles, sometimes on uneven surfaces or involving hills or steps. Group walks are at a measured pace, with plenty of opportunities to rest and take photos.
You will need to carry or wheel your own luggage from the bus to your hotel room, so we recommend packing light.

Solo Travellers
There are a limited number of single occupancy rooms available on each tour. Solo travellers who are open to the idea of a roommate may be able to arrange a same gender non-smoking twin room share. Email colin@mondumo.com to discuss.

You are responsible for the cost of your own drinks at meals and costs of free-time sightseeing. International flights and airport transfers are not included in the tour cost and should be arranged by yourself or with the help of a travel agent.
