Australia is often imagined through its biggest icons: the reef, the harbour, the cities, the rock. And yes, those places are unforgettable. But some of the most meaningful travel moments happen in the spaces between the famous landmarks in country towns, local museums, quiet coastlines, regional landscapes and conversations with people whose lives are deeply connected to the land.
On our Mondumo Australia in 14 Days tour, we’ve shaped the itinerary to include more of this side of the country. Alongside Melbourne, the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney, we spend time in regional New South Wales, including Coffs Harbour, Dorrigo National Park and Uralla. These places offer something a little different: a slower pace, a stronger sense of local character and opportunities to understand Australia beyond the postcard view.

A Different Kind of Australian Story
Rural Australia has its own rhythm. It is shaped by changing landscapes, farming communities, local histories and strong regional identities. Travelling in these areas gives you a fuller sense of the country and how locals live.
In Coffs Harbour, we spend time between the foothills of the Great Dividing Range and the Pacific coast. Whilst here we visit Yarrila Arts and Museum to learn about the local Gumbaynggirr people, Aboriginal culture and the story of the modern town. We take time to soak up the local vibe at the historical harbour jetty and make a special visit to a locally known spot where we can see Eastern Grey kangaroos in the wild.
These off-the-beaten path places tend to produce the kinds of unscripted moments that often become the highlights of a trip. Conversations with locals, visits to community institutions, and the slower pace of country life all add depth to our travel experience.

Coast, Rainforest and Countryside
One of the pleasures of touring Australia is the variation of landscapes throughout the country. After our time in the tropical north and the Great Barrier Reef, the journey south brings us into subtropical coastline, lush valleys and rainforest.
From Coffs Harbour, we travel inland through the Bellinger Valley to Dorrigo National Park, with time for a short walk through subtropical rainforest and views from the Skywalk. We continue across the Dorrigo Plateau, stopping at Ebor Falls before arriving in Uralla.
This stretch of the tour provides a wonderful sense of Australia’s variety. It is not all desert or city skyline. It's also coast, forest, waterfalls, pasture, plateau and country towns, each part adding a wider insight of Down Under to the journey.

The Small-Town Charm of Uralla
Uralla is a classic Australian country town and one of the places where the tour becomes especially personal. With its heritage buildings, local museum and stories of Captain Thunderbolt, it offers a glimpse into regional history and the character of Australia’s New England.
It is also a place where we connect with the present-day story of rural Australia. During our time near Uralla, we meet a local farmer whose work spans merino wool, beef cattle and agroforestry. It is a chance to hear directly from someone adapting traditional farming life for the present and the future.
For many travellers this kind of encounter is just as memorable, if not more so, as visiting a famous landmark. It adds a human connection to the places we visit.
More Than a Checklist
Mondumo tours are designed for travellers who want more than a checklist of famous sights. We still include major highlights such as Melbourne, the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour and the Opera House, while also offering an opportunity for discovery and connection.
Spending time in rural Australia allows for that. It gives us a more comfortable pace, less time rushing from one major attraction to the next, and more time to notice the everyday details that make a place feel real.
This is especially important on a small group tour. When the group is not constantly moving, there is more room for conversation, questions, shared meals and local experiences. We aim to build a richer sense of the country.

What about Uluṟu (Ayers Rock) and the Red Centre?
We’re sometimes asked why Uluṟu (Ayers Rock) and Alice Springs are not included in our 14-day Australia tour. The short answer is that including the Red Centre adds significant travel time and can mean long, hot days with less flexibility.
For this itinerary, we’ve intentionally decided to focus on different regions, highlighting Victoria (Melbourne), Queensland's coast and rainforests (Cairns), and rural and urban New South Wales (Coffs Harbour, Uralla and Sydney). This focus allows for more local connection, variety and comfort.
